"What boat are you on?" the dockmaster asked. It was the start of the 2014 summer and I was strolling around the town wharf in Onancock Virginia getting a sense of the place I'd be offering on behalf of my clients at auction. What boat was I on? Unfortunately the answer is "none". I had driven to Onancock Virginia that morning from Baltimore Maryland. As the crow flies, it would have been much cooler to arrive by boat. I imagined setting sail from Baltimore and heading out on the Chesapeake Bay. Oh well, at least I looked like I might be on a boat.
The town of Onancock Virginia has a wonderful slogan, "where history meets hospitality". As you might expect, there is colonial history with a settlement date of 1608 and a charter date of 1680. The snapshot I took from the wharf of the waters edge nicely illustrates that that this is indeed one of the last unspoiled places on the eastern shore.
The town of Onancock can easily be explored on foot. As I strolled past restaurants, antique shops, art galleries, and gardens, I saw this was a community where you could effortlessly unwind. Older buildings were in the process of being re-purposed, such as this bank-turned-coffee house on the main street.
A quick drive (or boat ride) from historic Onancock takes you to our auction site. As I drove down country roads I found remnants of the past greeting me along the way. The Mt. Nebo Church was my favorite. It looks like you could use the location to film a movie. How charming to see this house of worship in the woods.
Arriving at the auction site, the Underhill Creek Landing development, I rolled down the windows and took a breath of fresh air. It was quiet. Just a few birds circling in the sky. The location is on the shore of Pungoteague Creek which is a deep water tributary of the Chesapeake Bay.
